A sua composição química é constituída principalmente por Al 2 O 3 (94,5-97%) e por quantidades vestigiais de TiO 2 , SiO 2 , Fe 2 O 3 , CaO e MgO.
O Óxido de Alumínio Castanho é caracterizado por uma boa tenacidade, elevada resistência mecânica e dureza (9 na escala de Mohs). A microdureza do material atinge cerca de 1900kG/mm 2 . A massa específica (densidade) é igual a 3,90+/-0,05 g/cm 3 . A densidade aparente em função do tamanho é igual a 1,52-1,87 g/cm 3 . Possui uma condutividade térmica relativamente elevada e uma baixa expansão térmica. Em relação à eletricidade, é um isolante.
